Full-Service Or Limited-Service Hotels: Which Should You Book?

The next time you are planning a vacation or business trip, take some time to consider if you will need a full-service or a limited-service hotel. Generally, which you choose will depend on your budget and what you plan on doing while in the area. Full-service hotels have more amenities and are good if you will be spending a lot of time there. If you plan on merely sleeping at the place, a limited-service place will usually suffice. To help you see what you may be getting, here are some things people tend to look for in their travel lodging accommodations.

Rooms

A full-service establishment will usually have larger rooms than limited-service hotels. They will also have suites where you have a living and possibly a cooking area adjoining the bedroom. A suite may also have two bedrooms.

Food Service

While a limited-service place may have a simple area for breakfasts, most of them do not have a full restaurant or offer room service. They will often have menus for take-out and delivery restaurants you may order from. A full-service place may have numerous eating and drinking options, including room service. You can enjoy fine dining or specialty eateries or a simple cafe.

Exercise and Entertainment

Some limited-service places are adding some type of fitness area to their establishment while most full-service places already have them. An indoor swimming pool is more likely to be found in a full-service place, but most limited-service places have outdoor pools you can use if the weather permits. If you are looking for a game room, arcade, or internet cafe, you should check full-service places first.

Luxury Amenities

If you want to be pampered, get a massage, go to a spa, or use concierge services, you will need to go to a full-service place. However, you may be able to use a laundry room or a conference area in a limited-service place.

Of course, the above are generalities. You may find hotels that are in the middle as far as what they offer. You need to consider who will be with you on the trip and what they may need as well. If you have plans for activities outside of the hotel, make sure the weather will permit them all, or have backup plans if there is nothing to do at the hotel. The important thing is to consider what it is you need to make the stay comfortable and enjoyable.
