Lesser-Known Factors To Consider When Choosing Your Hotel

Whether you're planning a family vacation or a business trip, devoting enough time to finding the perfect hotel to suit your needs can make your overnight stay even better. When performing online research, many future hotel guests consider a variety of common factors -- the hotel's rating on travel review sites, the inclusion of a complimentary breakfast buffet, and whether there's a swimming pool, for example. While these factors are all valuable to keep in mind, it's also a good idea to think outside the box a little and evaluate some lesser-known factors, including these:

Check-In/Check-Out Times

Regardless of the nature of your travel, having an early check-in and a late check-out can make your hotel stay much more comfortable. In many cases, a hotel's check-in time is around 4 p.m., while the check-out time is 11 a.m. However, if you're meticulous about confirming these times at the various hotels you're considering, you can often find an earlier check-in -- 3 p.m., for example -- and a later check-out, such as noon. Whether you're a late sleeper or you'll be getting to town in good time, a hotel with better times can be more suitable.

Proximity To Toll Road

There are a number of location-based factors to consider when you're evaluating hotels, from the hotel's location to nearby eateries to its distance off your main travel route. Keeping location in mind, be sure to check a map to see how close the hotel is situated to the nearest toll roads -- and if they're the only logical choice for getting to the hotel. If you're traveling on a budget, the last thing you want is to have to use a toll road every time you come and go from the hotel. Likewise, keep the same idea in mind with toll bridges -- you don't want to pay a few dollars every time you travel between the hotel and the nearby tourist attractions.

Price Add-Ons

Take a moment to check what features at the hotel are complimentary. While you might want to check the availability of a free breakfast, don't stop there. Check to see if the hotel charges for wireless Internet. If you plan to connect during your stay, a pay-by-day fee can quickly add up. Many hotels, however, offer this perk for free. Likewise, check out the parking situation. You'll often find that parking has a charge at downtown hotels, but that hotels on the outskirts of town that have larger overall properties do not charge guests to park.
